How Personalization Beats Perfection

Polished ads, automated messages, AI generation.  It's everywhere.  And it's polished perfection.  How to stand out?  Personality. 


Customers are growing weary of faceless, soulless branding.  In support, it's even more drastic.  According to a recent study, 93% of people prefer human interactions to AI For small business, your humanity is your secret weapon.


Years ago, I worked with a company whose tag line ended with "with a personal touch".  It's what really set them apart from their competition.

Authenticity

Authenticity builds trust.  Corporate jargon and photos with perfect lighting every time makes your brand feel cold.  When you share behind the scenes content and true stories, even if they aren't perfect, you are building trust with your customer. 

  • Share pics behind the scenes
  • Use real photos in lieu of stock images whenever possible
  • Your marketing should reflect your teams personality

Customers appreciate honesty, and a too-polished exterior can come across as phony


Connection

Personalization creates a connection between you and your audience.  If they feel understood, they're more likely to engage.  Here are a few ideas to personalize your marketing.

  • Use the customers name in interactions - email, chat, social media exchanges
  • Market based on service types and interests
  • Follow up after purchases.  A genuine thank you goes a long way


The Human Advantage

You are a person.  So, you are personal.  Big corporations spend millions of dollars trying to sound the way like you.  Use that to your advantage.

Communicate as you would in person, conversational, letting your values shine through.  No algorithm can recreate your authenticity and empathy.


People Remember the Experience, not the Ads

Instead of trying to write the perfect post, think of how you interact with customers.  Think of a time you received great customer service.  Did you feel heard?  Did you smile?  What made you remember that service?  Try to deliver that same feeling to your customers as often as possible. 


In reality, connection creates a stronger bond than perfection.  Be real, relevant and human.  Your customers will appreciate that.  People do not buy based on perfection, they buy based on trust.
